Andrew had no ability
to moderate his delusions. Perhaps he was never able to see them as "not
real", as something generated by the disease within his own mind. He did not feel he had any control over the
voices.
Both John and I tried
to discuss with him some skills he may be able to learn to modify the voices. Andrew immediately dismissed the idea that he had any control
over the voices and again accused of us of not “getting it”.
I am sure now how little we really understood
about what he was withstanding day in and day out. We offered Andrew only what
we knew and it was not a good fit for him regarding how he dealt with
the delusions.
